OBJECTIVES
Prevention
- Increase the delay in the onset of sex amongst young people
- Increase people’s perception of risk to HIV infection in relation to their behaviours (Alcohol, transactional sex etc) and sexual partnerships and encouraging the development of risk reduction strategies.
- Reduce the number of multiple and concurrent partnerships
- Promote correct and consistent condom usage with all partners.
- Increase the number of people, especially men who undergo Voluntary Counselling and Testing for HIV and who receive their test results.
- Increase the number of people who test for HIV on regular basis
Care and Support
- Increase awareness of the linkages between HIV and TB
- Increase awareness about TB and its symptoms .
- Increase awareness of opportunistic infections and the need for early treatment
- Promote Positive living and Positive Prevention
Treatment
- Promote treatment literacy in particular adherence
Strategic Information
- Analyse the underlying behaviours and factors driving the epidemic to inform programmatic focus areas
- Determine the impact of communication interventions being undertaken in South Africa
- Undertake qualitative studies to deepen the understanding of why people engage in certain behaviours and to determine the language that can be used to convey relevant messages.
- Use periodic quantitative surveys to measure program progress
Advocacy
Undertake advocacy with policy and decision makers within government and civil society to ensure a more evidence based and strategic approach to HIV communication for prevention, care and support.
